Once you've tried it, you'll want it again and again: foot reflexology massage. How does it work? What does it do? And why does it feel so good? These are the questions we want to explore here.
You may have seen one of those colorful diagrams showing two feet divided into many different colored zones, each labeled with the names of bones, organs, and muscle groups. For example, at the tip of the big toe, you might see "skull cap," a little lower down "skull" and "jaw," and below that "cerebrum," "cerebellum," "skull base," and "neck." At the other end, toward the heel, you’ll find "abdominal and pelvic area," and on the inner back side, the "bladder."
The idea behind it is that there are reflex zones on the foot that mirror all the organs and muscle groups in our body and interact with them. Although not scientifically proven, foot reflexology—originating from Far Eastern traditions—is said to offer many benefits, especially as a supportive measure for chronic conditions, from digestive and menstrual issues to allergies, as well as skeletal or muscular disorders. It is also believed to help with sleep disorders, depression, migraines, or stress.

How does it work? First, the practitioner, physiotherapist, or masseur will ask if you have any complaints or pre-existing conditions. They will also examine your feet for swelling or injuries. If there’s nothing preventing treatment (such as diabetic foot or open wounds), the session can begin. The masseur then stimulates the reflex zones through targeted massage, aiming to send impulses via nerve pathways to the corresponding areas of the body, improving circulation and activating the body’s self-healing powers. A session can last between 20 to 60 minutes, with prices varying accordingly. There are primarily two types of massage: calming (sedative) or stimulating (toning).
Whether you believe in it or not is up to you. However, it’s safe to say that foot reflexology massage locally improves circulation and peripheral lymphatic drainage. And, undeniably, it simply feels good!
