Proper footwear for your health

Proper footwear for your health

Which woman (and some men) doesn’t have that one pair of shoes they can only wear while sitting because they’re so uncomfortable. Or even better, the pair that just sits in the closet but had to be bought anyway because it’s so stylish.

What properties should shoes have?

In the past, shoes were mainly used to protect us from injuries. They had no other function and didn’t need to meet any additional requirements. Today, this has completely changed. Shoes need to follow fashion trends, look good, and reflect personality. This often leads to shoes that look great but are totally uncomfortable, have the wrong shape, and constrict the foot. The perfect shoe, however, should be comfortable AND stylish.

The right length and width

Many people buy shoes that are too small and too narrow. It’s important to have enough space in the shoe, especially in the forefoot area. The ideal shoe is neither too tight nor too loose. It should have an allowance (space from toe tip to shoe tip) of about one fingertip (approx. 1.5 cm), as the foot slides slightly forward when walking. If this isn’t the case, the foot hits the front of the shoe when rolling and is constricted.

It shouldn’t be too wide either, as you won’t have enough support in the shoe and will slide around. This costs the foot an incredible amount of energy and strains the foot muscles enormously. It also increases the risk of falling.

Here you’ll find the application video for determining shoe size.

Most importantly: The shoe should adapt to your foot, not the other way around. BÄR shoes offer 100% Toe freedom and still provide perfect support.

Do you really know your correct shoe size? It often changes in adulthood due to muscle development or pregnancy.

The right materials

Why should I spend so much money on leather shoes when I can get shoes for €30? Just as important as the fit is the shoe’s material. It should be breathable and absorb moisture. Leather is a natural product and behaves like our own skin. It stores moisture and carries it outward, ensuring a good foot climate inside the shoe. If the shoe is too damp, fungus can quickly develop, which is often hard to treat. Do your feet a favor and don’t put them in poorly ventilated shoes made from synthetic materials (sports shoes with special functional materials are the exception). It’s definitely worth spending more money to buy leather shoes. However, they should be rotated regularly so the shoe can air out and the interior has time to dry completely.

You have that one favorite shoe too: the one you’d love to wear every day and never want to throw away. But that’s exactly why it has a high rate of material wear. Soles wear down unevenly, and seams come apart.
